Salisbury
- Off The Beaten Path...
With
so many charming attractions,
it’s easy to forget some of the side attractions that
Salisbury has to offer
the holiday-maker. First, a walk around the town is one of the most
pleasant
experiences you can enjoy as a traveller. There are some lovely shops,
restaurants, cafes and pubs in the network of streets in and around Market
Square. In fact, markets were held here two times every week
as long ago as
the early twelfth century. Even today, Markets are held every Tuesday
and
Saturday and there are some lovely stalls to check out if
you’re in town when
they’re on.
If
you’re fond of the arts, get over
to Salisbury Arts Centre, where you can see various
musical shows.
Theatre lovers may also enjoy the performances at City Hall
and Salisbury
Playhouse.
Towards
the borders of Salisbury are
the picturesque Elizabeth Gardens, right by the
Avon River. Aside from
having a playhouse, the gardens offer unique views of the Cathedral.
The gardens
also have a lot of natural wildlife such as ducks, geese and other wild
birds
(you can even spot the occasional fox trotting by). The sculpted
gardens
are quite lovely.
Salisbury
Racecourse
is one of the oldest racecourses in England, and there are pleasant
views of the
Wiltshire countryside from these grounds – you can even spot
the Cathedral in
the distance.
Finally,
for flying enthusiasts, the Old
Sarum Flying Club is an interesting place to visit. You can
spot planes take
off and land, and even sign up for some flying lessons if
you’re feeling
adventurous.
