Plan your short break or latebreak in England

London - is extremely desirable for a short break being so close to a choice of airports and yet having such a wealth of culture, history and cosmopolitan shopping to offer. It is a year round destination as there is always plenty to do whatever the weather and whatever your budget. London is best thought of as a collection of locations, each different in character and each having its own set of delights. Rather than trying to see everything in London at once, and suffering information overload, a series of short breaks, one is each "village", is ideal.

Relaxing in a luxury spa may be more your style and there are many such spas located in the most beautiful scenery where you can enjoy a pampering experience second to none.

Pageantry and character, castles and palaces, they are all to be found in England. You can visit the area associated with King Arthur of the Round Table fame, visit Sherwood Forest - once the haunt of Robin Hood, now the home of the very popular all weather Centreparcs, or spend a few days in Canterbury, famous from the tales of Chaucer and still a place of real character.

Stratford on Avon is the town most associated with Shakespeare and Ann Hathaway and you would of course see one of the famous Royal Shakespeare company performances. If you like boating you will probably be tempted out on to the river too.

Chester and York are both originally walled cities with a style unique to England. Both have extremely good museums which take full advantage of their cultural heritage. Where the old wall remains it has been carefully preserved and there will usually be a walk to take advantage of the views. Chester is the county town of Cheshire and York the county town of Yorkshire so connections to both are good. Because of their poplularity with tourists shops are likely to be open on Sundays - not always the case in the smaller locations. The zoo is a very popular choice for a Sunday outing.

Outdoor activities are available in abundance for your short or weekend break. Golfing, tennis, outdoor bowls and badminton are available almost anywhere. For windsurfing head for Newquay in Cornwall, for rambling or hiking the best locations are the national park areas. The peak district offers caverns and high peaks. The Lake district lakes and green fields. Dartmoor national park and the Yorkshire Moors offer more rugged walking and can be both enchanting or forbidding depending on the day.
Other more unusual activities include hang gliding, paintballing, indoor skiing and ballon rides. All of these need to be booked ahead.

England has a wealth of local steam trains often run by enthusiasts, and a very delightful short break could be planned around the routes of these trains.

Budget travellers can can find cheap holidays in England using the hostels available throughput the country.  The youth hostels association (YHA) accepts guests of all ages and there are many other hostels and bed and breakfast houses at very reasonable prices. Weekend or short break visitors however usually plump for the convenience of a hotel to make the most of their time.

There is a good choice of airports in England and it is now possible to fly to these from most cities in Europe. When travelling from the USA or Canada there is slightly less choice. The major airports have good rail and bus links. Taxi cabs are readily available. They will show For Hire if not engaged. Private hire taxis require pre-booking but if you book one while waiting for your lugage you will usually only have around 10 minutes to wait. They are cheaper than the traditional black cabs but you do need to call ad book one. If you wanted to book a cab for the day you would be best negotiating with one of the private companies. Car hire is available at the airport - but do remember that for the duration of your holidays in England you must drive on the left hand side of the road.
